Desert Challenge returns to the Dead Sea

Posted in Dishing the Dirt by Matt Ward on Wed 14 Apr '10

The ancient moon-like landscapes of Mount Sedom come alive as more than a thousand riders and runners flock to the biggest sports festival of the year.

In Hebrew this site detail the Desert Challenge. An annual event in Israel, held in December (provisional Dec 4/5, 2010). In an appeal to the global participants its race organiser Carin Goldblatt is appealing to the global trail and ultra community to come and take part in one of the world’s more exotic races and we have to say that the Night Run especially appeals.

Event release

The Night Run – 3 courses of moon-lit desert paths. The PRO:SPORT Desert Challenge is a chance to race and run in the challenging area of the Judean desert. The routes will be circular and will be run in the night during the full moon.

Participants will be expected to run with headlamps, and be independent and carry their own water and food. A further element to this challenge will be the extreme temperatures with the race starting in the cold of the winter night in the desert and finishing in the warmth of the morning sun.T

The Ultra is an off-road Ultra Marathon that was run this year its fourth consecutive year in the beautifull hilly area around Meggido (Armageddon) in Israel. This year we will have distances of 161km (100 miles) 80km, 50km and 30km.

We have had overseas visitors, but no-one from the UK. So come and enjoy this unique event.

That’s nice, although unexpected! I’ve done the desert run twice and can confirm that the run is just beautiful! full moon + glowing desert sands are amazing… but you should have a look at other events organized by this lady — her Ultra event is good as well: http://www.ultra.org.il/ultra/index.html
