It's lucky 13 for Mudge as Edwards takes Carnethy 5
Angela Mudge - win number 13 at Carnethy 5
GB international mountain runner Orlando Edwards stormed to a great win at Saturday’s 41st running of the Carnethy 5 Hill Race, defeating a field laced with top class fell and mountain running talent…
The HBT runner led from early on and didn’t look back as he won by over half a minute from Scots international Prasad Prasad (48:29) and multiple Carnethy 5 winner Rob Jebb (49:36), who was a further minute back in third.
Prasad - strong in second
Edwards’ winning time of 47:53 is the fastest since 2008, bettered only by Lloyd Taggart in the last 12 years, proving he is no stranger to fast mountain races with a host of experience at major mountain running Championship level.
Tom Owens concurred on the fast nature of the race stating that it was a “sprint” early on, and Hunters Bog Trotter Edwards simply ran away from the field which included the likes of Prasad, Jebb, Tom and Mark Addison, Jethro Lennox, Owens, Doug Tullie and Kenny Richmond in the top 20 – to take what must be one of the biggest wins of his career.
Edwards storms up the gulley
It wasn’t to be 2011 winner Tom Owen’s day, as he ran in 9th at the finish, stating:
“Legs were really stuffed today, and it’s a real sprint. Great field though. Cest la vie…”
There was a rather familiar feel about the women’s race as Angela Mudge took an amazing 13th win at this classic Scottish event. Her time of 56:03 was good enough for 26th overall from a field of 523 finishers, and was the Carnethy runner’s best time since her 2008 win.
Once again leading from the off, Mudge won by two and a half minutes from Moorfoot runner Sarah McCormack (58:42), with Mudge’s Carnethy team-mate Jasmine Paris close behind in third (59:17).
