Mourne Way expands in second year
Following up a successful opening year can be difficult but the Mourne Way marathon series organisers seem to have the recipe. Good fields contested every one of the impressive array of distances on offer…
A 10k, Half-Marathon, Marathon and the new Ultra which offered runners a “double-marathon” of 85km and 2860m climb were all contested on a bright day.
Eoin Keith
IMRA and ultra-running supremo Eoin Keith, Boards AC, set a hard pace in the latter breaking 50 minutes for the first 10k and finishing in 7:41 or basically two back-to-back 3:51 marathons. He had more than half an hour on Don Travers and almost eighty minutes on Barry Tinnelly.
Another of the rare crop of Wicklow Round finishers, Adrian Tucker, took seventh while Hanna Shields won the women’s.
In the marathon, Kevin Doyle triumphed in 3 hours 40 minutes with Ryan Maxwell and Barry Stewart close behind. Northern Irish hill running international Tish McCann, Newcastle AC, won the women’s race in 15th overall. The half-marathon saw Justin Maxwell first over the line with a five minute gap to the next man with Mags Fitzgerald first lady home.
David O’Flaherty romped home eight minutes ahead of the next finisher in the 10k and Sarah Graham was the ladies victor.
