Chepkwony comes closest in MvH
Kenyan Haggai Chepkwony was the lead runner in last weekend’s Man vs Horse race in mid-Wales. The classic sporting contest over 22 miles was won yet again by four legs, as local Llinos Jones took the overall victory in 2 hrs and 7 mins…
Chepkwony took the lead runner contest from Maldwyn-man Andrew Davies.
The race entered the general public’s psyche in 2004 when Huw Loob finally beat the equine competitors and scooped a massive £25,000 into the bargain, and is popular enough to get mainstream coverage each year.
Kenyan Chepkwony finishes in Llanwrtyd Wells
The Man v Horse Marathon began in June 1980 following a chat over a pint in the Neuadd Arms Hotel. The then Landlord, Gordon Green overheard two men discussing the relative merits of men and horses. The enterprising Gordon, never one to miss an opportunity to promote Llanwrtyd Wells and improve business at his hotel, decided to put it to the test. And so began Green Events and its first, longest standing and now internationally acclaimed event, The Man versus Horse Marathon.
This Telegraph.co.uk report is a little biased to the horse aspect, but a good read anyway…
