This weekend...
Pick of the weekend goes to the super-tough Pedol Peris Horseshoe. Often deemed Wales’ toughest mountain race, this one is a renowned beast, with over 8500 ft of climbing in 17.5 miles, taking in some of Snowdonia’s giants in the form of Y Garn and Glyder Fach…
For those who fancy something ‘shorter’ there is the Half Peris, a mere 8.5 miles and 4500ft of climbing! It seems to be a weekend of horseshoes, as another horseshoe with a fair amount of gain over its 11 mile course is the Cutler Fell Horseshoe up in Scotland, which re-emerges onto the calendar after a break since 2005.
Final horseshoe is on the Isle of Wight, as Ryde Harriers stage the Ventnor Horseshoe, the Wroxall Round and St Boniface races also takes place in the morning, with Ventnor in the afternoon.
Over in Northern Ireland it is the 33rd running of the Lowe Alpine Mourne Mountain Marathon. Entries are closed for this one, with website stating:
The Mourne MM is Ireland’s only two day endurance and navigation event held each year in the beautiful mountains of Mourne in Northern Ireland. It is run entirely on a voluntary and non-profit basis by a team with many years experience of organising and competing in this type of event.
In the Lakes you have the classic Dale Head race, with a couple of records dating back to 1995, still in the hands of top pedigree fell runners Sarah Rowell and Mark Kinch, and what’s more its says here that it’s free entry – you can’t get cheaper than that!
There are some even older records still standing at Lantern Pike in the Peak District, 5 miles and just over 1000ft of climb is what lays in wait tomorrow for those venturing over to Little Hayfield to have a crack at Ricky Wilde and Carol Greenwood’s marks.
Ambleside AC stage the Three Shires tomorrow too, 13 miles across some of the best the Lakes has to offer including Pike O’Blisco and Lingmoor.
Most of what we have mentioned here is entry on the day, and the weather doesnt look too bad, so get out there and take your pick.
