CVFR raid Hebog
Over for a recce of the Moel Wnion race which takes place this Saturday (rd4 of the British Fell Running Champs), a handful of Calder Valley’s finest graced the Moel Hebog race last weekend, adding that extra bit of class to what is locally known as one of Wales’ best fell races…
After his win in 2011 Aberystwyth’s Filipe Jones knows the hill pretty well and started off strongly on the 2500ft + ascent, chased by a Calder Valley trio of Alex Whittem, Ben Mounsey and Karl Gray.
Jones still led on the descent, but had Gray in close quarters as they plummeted back down to the village of Beddgelert nestled in the heart of Snowdonia, and it was Gray who took it on and outgunned the Welshman over the closing mile, winning in 48:13, just 11 seconds up on Jones. Both were well shy of the frankly incredible record of 43:57 set in 1989 by Colin Donnelly.
Karl Gray
Ben Mounsey finished third (50:16), with Whittem in fourth.
Helen Fines made it a proper good day out for the Calder Valley club as she took the women’s race with a fine display of climbing and ascending. Coming home in 58:42 it was a great final workout for Fines ahead of this weekends final Brit Champs race.

Ambleside’s Lou Roberts was second (69:24), with Borrowdale’s Sharon Schofield in third (71:39).
There was a typically great show from the photo boys Al Tye and Gwynfor James, how lucky we are to have them! Al’s shots are here with G’s images here, full results via the link on the WFRA site here.
