Steve Birkinshaw on stage one of the Dragons Back

Before the start of the 2012 Dragon’s Back race competitors knew it would be hard. By the end of the first day most will be under no illusion that this is quite simply the hardest race they will ever do…

200 miles in 5 days with 45,000ft of climb shouldn’t be taken lightly, and it sounds like the first day could well be the hardest of the lot, with stories of retirements and runners being transported back to the Llyndy campsite in Nant Gwynant for the end of day one.

Rob Baker looks relieved at the end of stage one

A full report on the day comes from Rob Howard of Sleepmonsters fame, on the Dragon’s Back website, with images on sleepmonsters.com here.

Day two takes the runners south with the destination campsite in Llanelltyd near Dollgellau, and there should be one or two aching limbs as dawn breaks tomorrow for the start of the second leg!
