Lizzie Adams at Cartmel

The opening 2012 Lakeland Trails series at Cartmel got off to a great start on Saturday as the biggest field yet for a Lakeland Trails event (1300 competitors) took part in the various events at a gloopy Cartmel Racecourse…

Runner from all over the UK took part in the Sticky Toffee Trail Races, with overseas visitors from as far as the USA, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium and France taking part.

Batala Lancaster got everyone pumping at the starts with their awesome Brazilian samba drumming. The going was distinctly soft for the course, and everyone had to work hard to earn their “survivor’s” T shirts and locally produced sticky toffee puddings. To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, there was even cold Guinness at the feed stations for those with Irish blood.

Commonwealth Games Champion, Lizzie Adams, who now lives in Ulverston, broke the 18km women’s course record, finishing an incredible fourth place overall. GB International Orlando Edwards, made the long journey from London and won the 18km Cartmel Trail Race comfortably.

The Sticky Toffee Trail Run 10km was won by Chris Barnes, from Blackburn Harriers, and Sarah Ridehalgh, from Accrington Road Runners scooped the first lady’s trophy.

A live performance by singer / songwriter Pete Lashley before the prize giving entertained the crowds. The event was supporting the local BAY Search and Rescue charity, along with King George V Playing Field Committee from Allithwaite.
