Twell and Vernon take 'expected' wins at BUCS
Andy Vernon - having a great season
St.Mary’s students Steph Twell and Andy Vernon took expected wins at Saturday’s BUCS cross country championships in Sterling. With Twell facing little in the way of international class opponents, her win looked a formality.
Vernon, however, had the pressure of favourite on his shoulders, but faced stiff opposition in the shape of in-form Mitch Goose and top UK junior Nick Goolab. Still, the Aldershot man has been superlative on the country since Christmas and few would have backed against him. So it proved as her ran away with the title for a 26 second win.
Twell’s win will be a fillip for the youngster. Since her rise to stardom in the last 3 years she has struggled for form in the last 12 months (starting with a disappointing World cross country in March, 2009). The step up from world-class junior to world-class senior is a huge gulf, as a littered history will dictate, and this could just be the springboard that Twell needs to get back on track in 2010.
