Aengus Burke

Last week we had news from the Novice Cross-Country series in Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow. However, there was more action in Leinster on the weekend’s of the 3rd and 11th of October

On the 3k course in Laois, Sinead Kelly won in front of St. Abban’s club-mate Sadie Wheatley and Emer Matthews, St. Michael’s Portarlington AC, took third. St. Abbans also had the 5th and 7th finisher which secured them team victory on the day.

In the men’s there was notable performances from the active hill runners of North Laois. While St. Abban claimed two individual gold medals as Colm Burke took first spot in front of North Laois’ Aengus Burke. Former Trail League winner Derek Coogan secured 3rd and had his fellow silver medallist from this year’s IMRA Irish Club Championship Martin McDonald in 5th. With Noel Marum (4th) they combined to take team victory ahead of St. Abbans.

Meanwhile in Meath, Bohermeen had a triumphant day with Derek Croal taking 1st, David O’Connell in 3rd and club victory. Only Dunboyne’s Sean Kinnane could take some glitter of the performance as he came home 2nd. The women’s club competition was a tighter affair: Linda Fahy lead Dunshaughlin home as she finished second ahead of Bohermeen’s Linda Gunning. The margin between the clubs was a mere 2 points in the end. Overall female winner came from Fr. Murphy in the form of Sharon Monaghan.
