Chaigneau, Forsberg, Sandes all excel at a tough Trans Gran Canaria
Seb Chaigneau on his way to another TGC win
If you went by the form book in ultra-trail running, this last weekend’s happenings at the Trans Gran Canaria race wouldn’t have seen you go far wrong as global trail giants took the spoils across a weekend of racing…
Ian Corless writes:
Tough weather conditions took it’s toll on the 2013 The North Face Trans Gran Canaria with some key favourites in the 119km race dropping – Miguel Heras, Carlos Sa and Gustav Reyes amongst others did not make the finish.
In the blue riband 119km TGC event, North Face runner Sebastien Chaigneau dominated the race for a second year running, with a great victory in 14:05:53, some 25 minutes up on Oier Ibarbia. In the women’s race Salomon’s Nerea Martinez was over 17 minutes up on Esther Fernández. Results here.
Ryan Sandes at the 2013 Trans Gran Canaria 83km race
In the 84km ‘medium’(!) race Ryan Sandes was never in trouble winning in 8:11:27, though was pushed hard all of the way by Salomon team-mate Philipp Reiter (8:27:31). Yurena Castrillo was well clear in the women’s race. Results here. (A little note here too about Shettleston’s Casey Morgan, finished an excellent 7th in 9:31:06!)
In the short 42km marathon event Marcin Swierc (2:58:54) was a clear men’s victor and easing herself into the season (after a winter skiing) was Emelie Forsberg, finishing 8th overall in 3:42:56. Full results for this one can be seen here.
