3 Peaks 2012: Joe Symonds wins coveted Yorkshire fell crown

Posted in At the Races by Matt Ward on Sun 29 Apr '12

Those of us present at the 3 Peaks race witnessed a great race for a number of reasons. Perhaps it will be remembered for the cutting, icy wind that greeted the 1000 runners who embarked on the 23.3 miles of this famous event…

Or maybe for the amazing support on the tops of the three great Yorkshire hills – namely Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – where some have described Tour de France like support, despite that harsh wind.

For some, however, it will be the year that the son of one of the 3 Peaks’ famous winners of the past (Hugh Symonds) stepped forward to claim this coveted title and carry on the Symonds fell dynasty.

Before attempting to put together a report for Mud, Sweat and Tears, we thought that we would get hold of Joe, ask him a couple of questions and let ‘the tape roll’ for his description of events. It seems the plan was a good one, as Joe’s words pretty much put the listener up there on the fells and is (even is we say so!) great listening…
