Weekend racing...
Duncan Harris at the 2012 Haworth Hobble
From the 32 mile Haworth Hobble to the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round, from the Wolf’s Pit to the Wye One Way 50, there was something for everyone this weekend, and ahead of next weeks big one at Lad’s Leap some of the big guns tested the water too…
Carl Bell was the man to beat at Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round and though it was a close run thing he was a little too strong for Pudsey’s Darren Kay, winning in 1:10:38. Tom Brunt was third.
Deborah Gowans won the women’s race ahead of Lynne Clough.
Gavin Mulholland (48.37) won the Ian Roberts fell race with young Katie Walshaw storming round in 52.03 to finish 4th overall and take the women’s race, plus a new course record by almost 2 mins. Helen Berry had a great run to beat Helen Fines for second place.
Simon Bailey had the beating of a quality line-up at the Wolf’s Pit Fell Race, though his 38.17 was outside of his 37.09 record from 2011. John Heneghan (39.34) had a strong run in second, with Rhys Finlay-Robinson just behind (39.41) in third.
Olivia Walwyn-Bush had the measure of the ladies and most of the men, easily winning in a new record time of 43.57.

At the long and hard Haworth Hobble it was to be Duncan Harris’ day, as the Chester Tri man won by 11 minutes in 4.18.30 from Calder Valley’s Jason Stevens (4.29.24) and Jim Rogers (4.32.32) in third. The mixed race was a lot closer with Ali Raw and Andy Nicholl (Bingley) and Jasmin Paris and partner Konrad Rawlik (Carnethy) having a battle to end, with Ali and Andy coming out on top in 4.53.59 vs Jasmin and Konrad’s 4.57.32.
In the women’s solo event Helen Skelton had a great run, finishing in 5.02.55. Full results are here, with images over at the Sport Sunday site.
Finally, some nice images from the Might Contain Nuts race the Wye One Way 50 race are now over at their Facebook page. The race, which is part of the Welsh Ultra Series, was won by Robin Houghton in 7.42.03, with Victoria Mousely (9.04.20) winning the women’s race and placing 5th overall.
The event reports:
Very early on Robin Houghton and JamesDowdell set a blistering pace on the initial big climbs of the day and established a few minutes lead over third place Toby Courage closely followed by Leslie Cupis and the ever smiley Victoria Mousley leading the women’s event.
A 3 mile climb out of Builth Wells at the 35 mile stage saw the wheels come off for some with James and Leslie taking a spot in the deck chair at CP 7 to recover!
Despite Robin’s healthy lead at this point his pace was relentless and he hammered it home to a fantastic time of 7 hours 42 mins and 3 seconds whilst Mark Edward Hopkinson came up through the pack to take second spot in 8:35:30, just pipping Toby Courage by a few minutes in the end. Toby demonstrated amazing consistency in maintaining 3 spot virtually from the start finishing in 8:38:27.
Super cool Victoria appeared to have everything under control and not only won the ladies race by over 2 hours but managed to come home in 5th place overall. A stoic performance by Hannah Griffen resulted in a time of 11:26:05 followed by Katie Samuelson Dean in 12:06:15.
