There was a resounding win for Serpentine’s Richard Phillips in round one of the 2011 Welsh Mountain Running Championships, at a sunny Foel Fras race in north Wales. Eryri’s Becki Law took the win in the ladies race..

Phillips is eligible for Wales and delivered defeat to some top quality and seasoned fell runners on this tough 12 mile course from Abergwyngregyn. His winning margin of over five and a half minutes from Welsh mountain international Math Roberts, with almost 10 minutes back to fellow international Iain Ridgway, should not be overlooked – both men have been in pretty good form over the last few weeks.

I’d be grateful if someone could fill me in on Phillips’ fell / mountain background as he isnt a runner who has previously figured prominently in these types of races in recent years – but obviously has some ability!

In the ladies race there was a clear win for Becki Law, ahead of jenny Heming and Rachael Maskell.
