Breaking: Kilian pips Tom at Zegama
Kilian leads Tom on one of Zegama's brutal climbs
After leading on the last descent the UK’s Tom Owens just fell short of the biggest win of his career to date, after the young master Kilian Jornet won the classic Zegama-Aizkorri Maraton Alpina today…
The two Salomon International Team members slugged it out over the closing kilometres will Jornet coming out on top by just 35 (3:57:39) seconds at the end of 42.1 hot kilometres, taking in a huge 2,736m of vertical ascent in the Basque Autonomous Region.
The sweltering weather meant that many athletes suffered and Rob Jebb’s record still stands as Jornet fell just 3 seconds short of the Cumbrian’s 2005 time.

A jpeg. of the top 15 is here, showing Miguel Heras in third, some four and half minutes back on Owens.
In the women’s race Abanzeta Kortazar led by nearly ten minutes at the half way stage, but was almost caught by reigning world champion Emanuela Brizio in the closing stages, however Spaniard Kortazar prevailed in 4:43:29.
A report from the ISF is now online here, with further reaction and images to follow.

Rob Jebb’s record is 3:53:18 (an extraordinary time for a very technical course) Kilian was actually 4 minutes off.
