Robbie Simpson

Young Scot Robbie Simpson continued his 2011 winning ways by demolishing a top-class field at the opening round of the SHR Championship on Saturday. He pulled way from the likes of Jethro Lennox and Tom Owens on a steep climb…

…up after about half a mile of the 4 mile Birnam Hill Race. Due to some issues with the Scottish Hill Runners site we were holding off on a report on this, and it still seems they have some problems – so, better late than never.

Robbie extended this lead to almost a minute by the finish, after an excellent descent. Lennox was second, with Matthew Sullivan in third. From an impressive 270 starters Simpson’s time of 28:43 is also a new course record, beating the time of 29.36 set by Prasad Prasad last year.

Never-the-less Facebook has come to the rescue as provisional results are now up here

Clare Whitehead was also a highly impressive winner of the women’s race, again easily taking the course record (33:47 Angela Mudge (2008), and beating young Catriona Buchanan by over a minute. Sarah McCormack was third.
