Coach 'em to the top
Time was fell racing consisted of getting to the top and back, or around a loop of hills, faster than anyone else. Well that is still the case, I suppose, only now you can become an expert – and pass on your knowledge to others…
Working with UKA, the FRA present an FMR (Fell and Mountain Running) Coaching Qualification, aimed at those wishing to specialise coaching expertise on fell and mountain running. It’s not cheap at £370, but that involves two weekends and and other sessions, and compared to many coaching courses these days is reasonable.
One thing you might want to clarify is that according to the course notes (on download at the FRA site) the first weekend has already taken place (in July), however we are sure that Graeme Woodward will be able to shed some more light on this.
The course is a mix of practical and theory developing generic coaching skills like observation, analysis, communication, demonstration and feedback in a fell and mountain running context. Much of the course will be delivered outside and will involve all candidates acting as coaches and athletes in practical sessions. The course will cover coaching skills, how runners learn skills, safety, nutrition, warm ups, cool downs, the difference between coaching adults and younger athletes, how to deliver a session, plan a yearly programme and more…
