Salomon Trail Team dominate at Orobie SkyRaid

At the 2010 Orobie SkyRaid race yesterday UK-based Salomon Trail Team affairs to win the men’s and women’s events. The race in the Italian Alps sees teams of three take part in a grueling test of both running and climbing abilities…
The event is devised to encompass the three discliplines of Sky Marathon® 42km +, a Sky Race® of around 30km and Sky Climbing®, 12km of high altitude running, scrambling and climbing, and also doubles as the world team championship event. The men’s team comprised top UK fell runners Andy Symonds, Tom Owens and Ricky Lightfoot. Speaking after the event Andy told MST:
“We had a great day. This is a super-tough event and very different from races in the UK. It’s basically three legs and finishes with a stage of running and via ferrata (climbing with ropes and ladders). Tom got a bit lost on the long leg but other than that it was a really good team effort.
It was a great course and a great day out for the Salomon Trail Team. We’re all pretty wasted now mind… The last leg that I did (the Sky Climb) was one of the hardest 1-hour runs I’ve ever done. 700m of vertical ladder climbing at 2000m above sea level (= struggling for oxygen), followed by a jelly-legged 1300m (23mins) drop down to the finish.”
The female team of Anna Frost, Natalie White and Anna Lupton was also fully in control and easily defeated the FlyUp sport team which included sky running champion Stephanie Jimenez.
