Scarr no scare for Drute and Kenny
Suzanne Kenny
Barry Minnock’s absence at Scarr meant the Leinster League title stays up for grabs for another week. Tristan Drute would be the one to take full advantage when the Sligo AC man secured his first win under the IMRA banner.
Once again a high-standard field made up the numbers behind him: the 2007 winner Peter O’Farrell trailed behind him with last year’s winner, Boards AC’s Eoin Keith third across the finish line.
The men’s team competition contained plenty of drama. With two runners in CNOC were on their way to a second win with Crusaders close behind. However, both teams failed to secure a high third scorer and UCD could celebrate their first win in this year’s league led home by Greg Byrne, having made the switch form Clonliffe Harriers. Boards AC recovered to second with Sli Cualann in third.
Suzanne Kenny who has been a revelation in the ladies’ category since her debut returned from injury to snatch victory ahead of Clonliffe’s Sonja Fuhrmann. Catherine Devitt finished out the leading trio who held a reasonably safe lead over the rest of the women’s field. Crusaders AC won the women’s team competition ahead of Clonliffe and Sli Cualann.
Another sunny day’s results put the record set on Scarr by James McFadden in 2008 into perspective: He ran 33:26 in torrential conditions but despite this the Leinster League continues to set a great standard: seven runners ran well enough to have won last year’s race with their times.

Next up, one of the League’s most beloved races at Sorrell Hill.
