Ron goes full circle
Ron Hill at the Commonwealth marathon, 1970
40 years after his ‘world record’ run in Edinburgh Ron Hill returned to the Scottish capital last weekend to take part in the Edinburgh Marathon. He isn’t an off-roader but old Ron is such a legend that a runner of any discipline should find his story inspirational…
He’s 71, and not even a car crash which hospitalised him with a broken sternum, a bunyon operation which put him in plaster for six weeks, or having serial killer Harold Shipman as his GP, could halt his daily run.

I think you’ll find that Ron, along with most of the top distance runners of his day (at least the northerners), actually ran quite a lot of off-road races – 3 Peaks, 3 Towers, Rivington Pike, etc!

You’re quite right Malcolm, he did. Just that most folk would associate him with marathons.
Also, I seem to remember him winning the Tour of Thameside too, a kind of off-road stage race in the Manchester area…
