British Champs Rd1 is this weekend...
Slieve Donard
Seems like it was only yesterday that Vic Wilkinson and Helen Fines were battling it out for the British Fell Champs in 2013, and Rob Jebb was taking yet another crown in the men’s championships…
Well, this Saturday sees it starting all over again, with the round one battle commencing in Northern Ireland at the Donard Challenge. With it being the only ‘short’ race in 2014 you can bet that most of the big guns will be out there, laying down markers, with the traditional opener over there also being an opportunity for some club trips and a bit of post-race craic at some of the fine hostelries in the area!
As far as the racing goes, look no further than this excellent race preview from NI Running:
This Saturday, the 29th March 2014, the British Fell Running Championship bandwagon will roll into to the coastal town of Newcastle, County Down. The Donard Challenge mountain race is the first event of the four race Series.
This new route, classed as a short race in term of the Championship is, as it says in the title, challenging. Measuring 10k in distance, with over 850m of climbing, the race will take in Millstone Mountain before climbing to the summit of Slieve Donard at 850m, then descending all the way to the finish in Donard Park at sea level. This should make every competitor’s journey well worthwhile and satisfy the most discerning fell runner.
