Trail Marathon Wales is full!
2012 winner Andy Davies
Moving into its second year one of Wales’ biggest trail running events, Trail Marathon Wales, has closed entries to the full marathon, after reaching the maximum 400 entries in a little over 90 days for the June 2013 race…
Trail Marathon Wales also hosts a half marathon and with over 300 entries from the maximum 500 already taken for that event, meaning that overall race entries now stand at 730. Organisers expect the whole event to be full early in the new year.
The 2012 event was hailed a major success for trail running in Wales, with many competitors stating that the race was one of the best that they had ever attended. The tough terrain and friendly atmosphere, coupled with what some also called the best goody bag at any event, ensured that the Coed y Brenin race has had runners coming back in droves for the 2013.
The 2012 marathon route profile!
Event Organiser Matt Ward stated:
“It’s great news for us as an event. The event will continue to grow to be a major landmark event on the UK trail running calendar. With the event not taking place until next June (22) we are obviously very happy to have filled the marathon race a full 6 months ahead of race day.
“Entries are still open for the half marathon, and we are sure that the whole event will be full in the new year. It’s a fact that we could field entries of well over the 900 total limit, but in reality we could not manage the amount of visitors and cars to the Coed y Brenin Forest Park and in a way this is an organic way of limiting the entry numbers and hopefully adding a node of exclusivity the the race – meaning that year on year the TMW places will become more and more sought-after.

“Plans are moving along at a pace for the 2013 race, and we are sure it is going to be an even bigger and better event for the North Wales area and Welsh trail running. Many sponsors have renewed for 2013 and we are some way down the line to securing a couple of new ones, and hopefully one major private sponsor. Oh and we will also be launching a brand new website in January to keep runners and supporters up to date – more on this in the New Year!”
The organising team are also very aware of using local suppliers and contractors for the event, and in 2012 pushed almost £20,000 into those local businesses in supply and contract work. Additionally, the event also brought a large economic boost to the south Gwynedd area in terms of visitor spend, at a time when the economy most needs it.
Ward concludes:
“This is one of the most important aspects for us. We really are proud of the fact that almost every aspect of the race, economically, remains inside Wales. We are also very conscious of including local clubs and organisations at the event too, and will once again be working closely with the likes of South Snowdonia MRT, Meirionnydd Running Club and of course Forestry Commission Wales in 2013 to bring a great event to the area.”
