The 2nd Salomon Zugspitz UltraTrail will take place around the Zugspitze Mountain on June 22-24, 2012. After last year’s successful debut the race has quickly developed into an acclaimed international running event. Runners from 32 nations have signed up for the 2012 race with organisers expecting 1000 participants…

Full Plan B event release

The exceptionally talented runner Philipp Reiter (GER) from Salomon Trailrunning Team, who won the Supertrail surprisingly as one of the youngest participants in 2011 will try to defend his title:

“The Zugspitz Ultratrail fascinated me last year: fantastic view, perfect organization, great atmosphere and a real challenge! Steep ascents, fast forest roads, narrow root-covered paths – always in the shadows of the powerful Zugspitze! This year too I’ll take part in the Supertrail; after all I have a title to defend!”

One of the favorites on the Ultratrail distance is his team colleague Julien Chorier (FRA), who finished third together with the ‘sorcerer’s apprentice’ Philipp Reiter at the GORE-TEX® TRANSALPINE-RUN last year.

In 2012, the SALOMON ZUGSPITZ ULTRATRAIL is again the official qualification run for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc. The finishers of the Supertrail get two quali-points, the finishers of the Ultratrail get three quali-points for the registration for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc 2013.

Ultratrail and Supertrail – two challenging trails

Race director Wolfgang Pohl’s trail team has arranged the tracks in an even more attractive way this year. The Ultratrail around the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein is one of the most beautiful trails in the entire Alps region.

It starts in the Zugspitze village Grainau. The round 100 kilometers long route shows all its beauty on spectacular trail sections at the foot of the Waxenstein and the Scharnitzjoch, along the Ferchensee and the Osterfelder below the Alpspitze, but with its 5420 meters of altitude difference up and down it also presents the natural obstacles of the Wetterstein.

However, the round 69 kilometers shorter Supertrail distance will also put maximum strain on the participants. After the start in Leutasch-Weidach in the ascent towards Scharnitzjoch it gets really tough before the Supertrail track joins the Ultratrail track. On this route the runners must manage a total of 3120 meters in altitude difference.

The winners of the Supertrail will be expected after seven hours in Grainau, the first finishers of the Ultratrail will probably reach the finishing line after eleven hours.

An interesting program also awaits the spectators and accompanying persons. On Saturday, June 23rd visitors have the opportunity to take the Kreuzeckbahn to the course so they can cheer for the athletes at their last climb. On Friday and Saturday they can inform themselves about the latest products at the big running fair in Grainau. There are also two very special side-events: On Friday evening the PETZL NIGHT ON TRAIL as well as a free Petzl Trailrunning workshop with last year’s winner Julia Böttger.

The online registration is possible up to June 18, 2012. With all information at www.zugspitz-ultratrail.com
