Lizzy Hawker - "I’d like to run for a long time"

In a fascinating article iRunFar writer Meghan Hicks peers into the world of Lizzy Hawker, arguably the greatest British ultra distance runner in history, and finds that behind that familiar smile lurks a steely and thoughtful character.

Reading the numerous interviews out there you get the feeling that Hawker is fiercely independent, happiest when at one with nature and alone in the wilderness. Though my experience at last year’s record 24 hour run in north Wales was that Lizzy is also warm, approachable, often pensive and very much a family person, shown by her emotional embrace with her parents at the finish of her day-long epic on the streets of Llandudno.

To achieve what Hawker has in the last 4-5 years requires the kind of inner strength, mental toughness and running talent that few possess – male or female – so for Hicks this latest meeting was all about getting inside that mind, as if chipping away with each question.

Ironically the meeting came just a day after Hawker had produced one of her more forgettable performances of 2011 at the TNF50 in San Francisco, however in a skilled manoeuvre Meghan avoids the previous day’s happenings as they ‘do coffee’. Read on...
