Fortune in the lead after Mullaghcleevaun

Bernard Fortune

IMRA die-hards should have been salivating at the return of Mullaghcleevaun to the calendar. Wicklow’s second highest peak (849m) is characterised by its featureless peak, reminiscent of the Russian tundra in winter, and includes a stint to the rockier Black Hill.

With 12.1km and 800m ascent, the race ranked only behind Circuit of Avonbeg and the decider at Mt. Leinster in terms of toughness in this year’s Leinster Championship.

Sadly, the race only attracted a small field of 28 runners, the navigational element seemingly still a great impediment to mass participation. Among the field were Bernard Fortune and Zoran Skrba who raced each other hard to finish in 68:16 and 68:30 respectively.

They now hold 1st and 2nd in the championship but Colm Hill remains the favourite if he adds a third win at Mt. Leinster and few will bet against him after his dominating performance there last year. Paul Nolan took third in the men’s and also remains will positioned for the overall win while Roisin McDonnell wrapped up the women’s title with her win.
