Salomon Sports vs The North Face. Round 1: The Battle of the Paclites. It’s the fight we’ve all been waiting for: Salomon Sports takes on The North Face. Who will win this war to be the ultimate victor of outdoor gear?

In the left corner, at a retail price of £150, it’s the Salomon Outlook Paclite Jacket. And on our right, costing a reduced rate of £130, it’s The North Face Circadian Paclite Jacket.

And they’re off. And there’s not much to chose between these two rivals, both being made of polyester Gore-Tex® PacLite® fabric, both lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and seam-sealed. Both too have two zipped hand pockets, adjustable hoods, and full-length zips. Gosh, it really is neck and neck between these two, both having all the right specs.

But no, just when we think we’ve reached a stalemate, Salomon delivers a vital blow. The North Face has forgotten that women have curves and torsos, and have made a jacket too short and wide. Salomon has tailored the waist and lengthened the coat to make it a perfect female fit. What a killer move.

But just when we thought it was all over, The North Face fights back. And they’ve gone technical this time. Now they’ve a place to stow away the hood, under armed zips for added ventilation, an extra Napoleon pocket, a cosy chamois-esque inside neck to avoid zip rub, and softer Velcro adjustable cuffs than Salomon can muster up.

And at £20 cheaper, I’m afraid The North Face might have just clinched this opening fight. That gives us the result:

The North Face: 1
Salomon: 0
