Mayr takes GP Final
Andrea Mayr wins at Smarna Gora
The Smarna Gora race (forming part of the WMRA GP series for 2009) produced a thrilling finale to this years Grand Prix – the seven-race series which crosses the European continent taking in some classic routes and venues. The men’s race saw a huge tussle, with 55 seconds covering the first 6 runners…
Jonathan Wyatt at Grand Ballon
Victory went to Antonio Toninelli of Italy, by a mere six seconds, from Czech athlete Robert Krupicka. Down in sixth place was reigning champ Jono Wyatt, doing just enough to retain his crown. In doing so Wyatt has now won an unbelievable 8 World Mountain Running Grand Prix titles.
Toninelli and Krupicka battle it out
Reigning female champ Anna Frost was competing in her first GP of 2009, ironically the last event, due to her persistent knee injury. However, the Kiwi now seems to be back on song finishing a strong runner-up to Austria’s Andrea Mayr.
Andrea Mayr
Mayr unfortunately had only competed in two previous events and therefore could not win the overall GP series. Still, she underlined her class by winning handsomely from Frost, her time good enough for a top 25 finish overall. The womens’s crown for 2009 has gone to Iva Milesova, doing just enough in the last race (6th) to take to the overall victory.
Full overall standings are provisional, and will appear here when calculated by the WMRA.
Smarna Gora results for the men and women are now online…
