The Lake District Mountain Trial was started in 1952 by the Lakeland Regional Group of the YHA as part of their twenty-first anniversary celebrations. The first Trial started in Langdale, the runners ascending Bowfell, Esk Pike and Scafell Pike…

The Trial is an annual event held at different venues in the Lake District in mid-September. It is considered to be one of the major events in the fell-runner’s calendar. The Men’s and Women’s courses will be severe tests of route choice, navigational skill and stamina in difficult mountain country. The men’s route will cover a maximum of 20 miles and the ascent and descent of about 8000 ft.

and interestingly…

The Lake District Mountain Trial became the first event in England to be run regularly on orienteering principles, a decade before the sport became firmly established in this country.

The list of previous winners reads like a whos who of fell running over the last 50 years – Joss Naylor and the Bland ‘family’ winning it no less than 25 times between them!

With no race in 2008 due to water-logging the LDMT regulars will be pleased to find a (hopefully) relatively dry and pleasant weekend, weather-wise, so even if you aren’t running it will be a nice weekend to be out on the hill supporting. Info on the exact location in the Lake District can be obtained by emailing [email protected]

The race classes are:

Men’s Trial: around 16 miles and 7000ft climb. Estimated winning time = 4.5hrs. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs

Women’s Trial: around 12miles and 5000ft climb. Estimated winning time = 3.5hrs. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs

Short Trial: around 10 miles and 3500ft climb. Estimated winning time = 2.5hrs. Minimum age for entry: 18yrs

About MST

Mud, Sweat and Tears was dreamt up some time ago. I had returned to the sport of running (competitively) after around a 15 year layoff due to injury.
