Steve Vernon at this year's Inter Counties race

Steve Vernon retained his UKA Mountain Running title yesterday, as he was a very comfortable winner of the GB trial race for the World MR Champs next month. The Stockport man went into the race as clear favourite, after leading the GB men home in last months EMRC in Turkey…

Glenridding – and Helvellyn – in the Lakes was the venue for this selection race which saw (bar a few absences) the cream of UK mountain running take to the start line.

The win ensures that Vernon will once again spearhead a UK mountain running team heading out to Vallecamonica for the championships on the 2nd of September, as he covered the 11.5km race in 55:46, over a minute and a half up on his nearest competitor.

Racing behind saw a great tussle between Ethiopian (running for Cambuslang) Wegene Tafese and 2012 British Fell Champs Joe Symonds, with Tafese prevailing by one second in 57:18. Behind them the talent was deep as 2011 Commonwealth champ James McMullan pipped Chris Smith for fourth, with Northumberland athlete Nick Swinburn in sixth. With 2012 Snowdon winner Murray Strain in seventh, Prasad Prasad 8th, Gareth Raven 9th and Rob Samuel in 10th, the top 10 was packed with GB internationals.

Victoria Wilkinson

It was a good day for Vic Wilkinson too as she defeated Kate Goodhead in the senior women’s race by 21 seconds, as she covered the 6.5km route in 40:11. The Bingley runner has represented GB at the World Champs in the past, having been crowned World Junior Champion in 1997, so it’s great to see her back on form and looking ahead to yet another GB vest.

Rebecca Robinson was third, with Katie Walshaw 4th and Claire Whitehead making up the top 5. Running the same distance Brad Travis was a comfy winner of the junior men’s race, ahead of Peter Harrison and Garry Rankin.

Teams for the forthcoming Championships in Italy will be announced soon, and with the absence of Robbie Simpson (senior men), Emma Clayton (senior women) and Mary Wilkinson (senior women), it will be interesting to see how the selections go.

There was a predictable win for the newly crowned Euro champ Annabel Mason, showing her huge potential and class winning the junior women’s race by almost two minutes from Mel Hyder and Caroline Lambert.
