Morgan Donnelly at Coniston 2011

With 15+ fell races in England, Wales and Scotland, over the next few days the UK fell and trail running season is in full flight now. Pick of the weekend in England goes to the classic that is Coniston, where a top quality field is expected as always…

Also catching the eye is the Pendle Cloughs race and Coiners on Monday.

Up in Scotland there is the tough Stuc a’Chroin race, which takes in over 5000ft of climb on its 22km route, will anyone ever get anywhere near Ian Holmes’ near untouchable sub-two hour record?

In Wales Saturday sees the excellent Red Kite Challenge at the Nant-yr-Arian forest near Aberystwyth and should produce another record entry, on a course which is fast gaining a reputation as a great trail race.

The longer Ras y Diafol takes place on Sunday. Also tomorrow is the Llangynhafal Loop near Moel Famau and with its steeper than steep gully ascent this one is a cracker. All details on the WFRA here.

More info on racing for the rest of the month online from respective Welsh, English and Scottish associations here WFRA, FRA and the SHR sites. The forecast looks reasonable this weekend, though probably chilly on the hills, so whether racing or just running for pleasure take the appropriate kit and enjoy!

Hope you’re going to feature the British Championship race in Northern Ireland this weekend?
A real tough short race and a great weekend in the fellrunning world.
