The weather was more like June than March on the uplands of the UK this weekend, as warm conditions saw for some hot racing. Carl Bell, Robbie Simpson, Andres Jones, Helen Fines and Jasmin Paris were amongst the winners…

Carl Bell

Carl Bell continued to make his mark on the English fell running scene with a big win at the classic Edale Skyline race. Though a fair few minutes outside of Gavin Bland’s course record of 2.34, his winning time of 2.41.55 was quick. He made light work of the strength-sapping 21 miles, ahead of Kim Collison and Tom Brunt. Jasmin Paris (3.18.14) from the Carnethy club took the women’s win from Judith Jepson.

Results are here with lots of cracking images here, here and here.

Chris Loftus was the winner at Rivock Edge, with Holmfirth’s Lucy Needham winning the women’s section. Andy ‘wharfeego’ Holden got some lovely bird’s eye shots too, view ‘em here.

Andres Jones on top of Yr Aran

As previously reported Andres Jones (1.25.22) took the win at Yr Aran in Wales, in pretty hot conditions. After leading at the top by a handful of seconds from sibling Filipe, Andres would not expect to hold off his fast-descending brother. However, do that he did and was a clear 90 second winner by the finish line in Llanuwchllyn. Mark Roberts (Borrowdale) made the long journey to Wales for his 50th birthday, and finished third. Of course taking the V50 prize on his debut too!

After a battle on the slopes with Hazel Robinson, Helen Fines overcame the Ambleside runner to win the women’s race in 1.47.09. Eryri’s Andrea Rowlands was third.

Helen Fines

Up in Scotland we are still waiting for new on the Boundary Series races over the weekend. However, Scottish Hill Racing man chris Upson has reported back:

I was at the Deuchary Hill Race on the hottest March day ever recorded in Scotland yesterday. On the run in, Robbie Simpson was already a mile or so up the track on his warm down! I expect he’ll have broken the course record, but haven’t seen the results yet…

We’ll have results and shots when they become available.

Finally the classic Wrekin Fell Race went off in warm weather yesterday and…nope, no details yet. We’ll keep an eye out and report back when we get anything.

It wasn’t me racing at Ras Yr Aran, although I was out on the hill! It was Hazel Robinson having a good battle with Helen Fines and just getting pipped at the end!

Thanks Lou, I was given a bit of duff info, as I havent seen the results as yet and just got the women’s winner / time…
