European medalist tests positive
Portugal’s Jose Manuel Goncalves has been stripped of his bronze medal at this summer’s European Mountain Running Championships in Turkey after ‘testing positive’ for drugs…
Goncalves was tested during the event this summer and has subsequently been handed a two-year ban after his offence at the Championships, which was won for a 5th time by Ahmet Arslan.
This significant piece of news almost went under the radar, and is the sports second major championship doping offence after the shocking affair of Elisa Desco some two years ago now.
The statement on the WMRA says:
The Federacao Portuguesa de Atletismo has imposed the sanction for a first offence of two (2) years ineligibity from 11.8.2011 until 10.08.2013 and disqualification of all results since and including 10.07.2011 to the male athlete Jose Manuel Goncalves
This decision was taken following an in-competition doping control conducted on 10.07.2011 during the 10. European Mountain Running Championships 2011, in Bursa, Turkey.
