Inverclyde dethrone Shettleston
The Scottish Cross Country relays champs threw up deserved winners in 2010 as Inverclyde AC romped to a near gun-to-tape victory at a sunny Cumbernauld on Saturday. In fact it was the Inverclyde B team that got off to a flyer, through Chris MacKay…
However, going into leg two it was Mark Pollard who took over the lead for the black-and-white’s A team, bringing them home with a few seconds to spare ahead of Shettleston’s Matthew Gillespie – pulling the Glasgow club up to second place. Central AC were in third, just in behind.
And that is the way it stayed for the rest of the race as the Inverclyde boys rattled off two more fast laps, courtesy of Craig Ruddy and fastest man of the day, Dan Mulhare, ripping round the Cumbernauld park route in 12:27.
So, Inverclyde AC picked up only their second XC relay title, with last year’s winners Shettleston having to settle for silver. Central AC were brought home by Ross Houston for the bronze.
In the women’s race it was a story of the juniors showing the way, as the Dunde Hawkhill girls came through on the last lap, courtesy of a storming alp by GB junior international Lily Partridge, coming from third place to take the win from Kilbarchan AAC. Long-time leaders Fife had to settle for the bronze. Elspeth Curran (Kilbarchan) ran the days fastest leg in a swift 14:22.
