Grasmere
The juniors get going at Grasmere
With so much going on in the world of off-road running (UTMB, Kima, World Masters, TransRockies) it would be easy to overlook the UK race scene. But not a bit of it, as we catch our breath and catch-up on the fells of Britain, and some great weekend racing…
The Grasmere Seniors guides race is steeped in history
Top of the shop must be the fell-classic that is the Grasmere Senior Guides race. As reported last week this race is part of fell running folk-lore and the respect it commands from the fraternity can be seen in the start list that it generates every year. A total of 123 runners lined-up for the 1.5 mile race (900ft ascent) over Gray Crags, in more favourable conditions after the mudbath of 2009.
This year was to be Rob Hope‘s year. The Pudsey and Bramley man wasn’t first up the classic hill, but was first down, as he passed 8-time winner Rob Jebb as the line was in sight. Hope’s win comes after another good year and as he heads towards another possible British fell running championship in 2010 he is beginning to enter the ranks of fell runners who history will remember.
Pippa Maddams at Borrowdale 2010
Pippa Maddams took her second win in as many years, winning the women’s race – a full minute faster than in 2009 – and is also enjoying another dominant year in the women’s fell running scene.
Results and images are a bit scarce at the moment, but we will point you towards them when they become available. Great discussion as always on the FRA forum.
