Prasad leaps to 6th on Garnedd Ugain

For many UK mountain runners who excel best at the uphill bit of mountain running, Sunday was the big day in their calendar. It was the selection race for the upcoming 2010 World Mountain Running Champs in Slovenia, and by all accounts was a beast of a race…

Over 3500ft of climbing in less than 7 miles for the men, with equally brutal (albeit shorter) routes for the senior ladies and junior men and women. There were some outstanding performances across the events, with Welsh youngster Dewi Griffiths annihilating the junior mens field.

Tom Cornthwaite has it in the bag

Revelations also came in the form of Tom Cornthwaite, highly dominant in the men’s event, and Rob Samuel (4th), who was just outsprinted by James McMullan for an automatic selection berth in the same race. John Brown spliced them in second.

Olivia Walwyn also ran out a comfortable winner in the women’s race, by over one minute, from Anna Lupton and last year’s winner Kate Goodhead. The trio win automatic selection for Slovenia. and in the junior women’s race Skipton’s Becky Lambson easliy won over the 4km route ahead of Hannah Bateson.

Entries were up on last year’s event (possibly helped by the fact that the races were also counters in Welsh regional champs and the McCain Mountain Running Challenge), but it would still have been interesting to see some more of the more seasoned ‘fell runners’ from around the country who excel in uphill races.

That aside this course and excellent organisation (along with no less than three photographers on the route!) were a worthy combination for such a prestigious event, and the comments after the races on Facebook and Twitter were those of a course that was super-tough, and had many athletes collapsing at the finish. A good warm-up for Slovenia then!
