Vertical World Circuit® - Sydney Tower Run Up
Thomas Dold at the Sydney Run-up 2010
Germany’s Thomas Dold, current Vertical World Circuit® champion, has won the Sydney Tower Run Up – 1,504 stairs in 7’4”, repeating his 2009 win and time. The fastest woman was also last year’s winner, Australian Vanessa Haverd, who won in 8’45”…
Both Dold and Vanessa bagged themselves a cool $5,000 for their 7-9 minutes of work…
The record up the Sydney tower is held by Australian Paul Crake, who raced up the stairs in 6’52” in 2000, still 12 seconds faster than Dold.
The Sydney Tower Run Up is the 7th stage of the Vertical World Circuit® uniting the world’s most iconic skyscrapers in a 9-race circuit across four continents. These mighty towers are the scenario for this fast-growing sport where thousands of amateur athletes and top international specialists race up 100 flights of stairs in just a handful of minutes.

In fact, the winners’ times are ten times faster than the hour it takes mere mortals to scale the tower, (the same height as the Eiffel Tower).
The world’s top vertical runners will battle in the next VWC race on the Collserola Tower in Barcelona on October 5 and in the final in Singapore on November 21st where the Vertical World Circuit® champions will be crowned.
Under the auspices of the International Skyrunning Federation, high altitude racing specialists, this new sport is under the microscope of the federation’s researchers who are casting light on these extraordinary performances.
This unique data will not only be used to optimize training for stair running, but has generated “Vertical Fitness®”, a health and wellness project aimed at creating awareness among overweight or sedentary people of the benefits of going “vertical” – but one step at a time.
