Peter O'Farrell at the 2008 World Trophy

Rathfarnham brought a “new” team to the unique Sorrell Hill race when newcomer Colm Moran helped veterans Peter O’Farrell and Aaron O’Donohue secure the club’s fifth win in seven and put regular solar flare between them and their nearest rivals.

Peter O’Farrell bounced back from his fourth-place finish at Carrauntoohil to win the race ahead of the hard-chasing Seamus O’Boyle, CNOC, and Eoin Keith, Boards AC.

Last week’s winners from University College Dublin combined well for second spot with three men in the top-10. Eoin Keith’s finish helped Boards take third on a very competitive day sporting eleven finishing teams. The result also meant Eoin Keith now leads the league but Barry Minnock needs but one win in the final four races to secure his third title.

The start was furious on the short fire-road before a grassy ride takes runners to the unusual middle-section of the race: A largely flat grassy stretch before the final steep climb on a dirt-path up to the cairn on Sorrell Hill. Light mist blocked the best views over the Blessington Lakes and a stern headwind made the going tough.

Sorrell Hill 2009...

And Suzanne Kenny toughed it out to secure another win despite being hampered the after-effects of her ankle sprain earlier in the year. With four wins in four starts, she needs another three results to take the ladies title and on this form clubs should be scrambling for her services in the upcoming cross-country season. Crusaders showed similar consistency as the won by default and continue leading the ladies team competition.
