A very strong Scottish hill racing contingent make their way south this weekend for the UKA Inter Counties fell champs at Llety, north Wales. Mark Johnston reports on the detail…

The Scots look set, yet again, to make a big impact at this year’s UKA Inter Counties Fell Running Championship. This year’s course covers 9 miles with 2900ft of climb, a challenge which will be relished in particular by the in form Robbie Simpson of Deeside, who was recently second in the Scottish Athletics Championships at Ben Lomond, and a very impressive fourth in the first round of the British Championships in Northern Ireland.

The Scottish West men’s team will be hoping that last year’s Inter Counties silver medalist Matthew Gillespie and last year’s British Fell Running silver medalist Tom Owens both make the start line after recent illness and injury problems. Scottish Internationals Sula Young and Clare Whitehead will also be looking forward to taking on the best of the UK mountain runners in the women’s race.

The Inter Counties event is the first race in the new four race McCain Mountain Running Challenge Series.
