Harris a surprise winner at Fellsman

The Grough is a superb walker and climber resource, it’s also a daily bookmark for MST, and here’s why. Their feature on the 2010 Fellsman is quite brilliant. Insightful, in-depth and full of useful miscellany that makes for a great read.
Racing wise it appears that there was a little upset on the books too. Few would have bet against Mark ‘Fellsman’ Hartell or long-distance MM specialist Steve Birkinshaw taking this one, however it seems a bit too much chatting and complacency on the old navigation front ensured that the duo got a bit lost and were overtaken by relative novice Duncan Harris.

In an event that saw volunteers being taken ill, runners getting lost, and Harris’ unexpected win, it sure was a Fellsman to remember. 43 yr-old Harris took the win ahead of Hartell and Birkinshaw. Nicky Spinks won the woman’s prize, finishing a superb 8th overall.
Such was the suprise of Harris’ win (not least to him) he was not even around for the race presentation, having to rush off, the Chester man said: “I couldn’t stay as I had promised my daughter, Anna, age six, I would be back for her first ever organised event: a 10-mile off road cycle ride.” What a guy!
