Tirunesh Dibaba

The senior women’s race at this year’s World Cross Country champs should be one of the most exciting in whole of the programme as one of world endurance running’s rising stars meets one of the greatest women’s distance runner of the current era…

Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba is already a multiple-world XC champion, and has since added Olympic track titles to her growing array of honours – indeed she is fast becoming one the all-time great female distance runners. Pretender to the throne is Kenya’s Linet Masai.

Masai - running poetry

Her tall, elegant style has won her much admiration over the last few seasons, and propelled her to the World 10,000m track title in Berlin. Yet at last years World XC she could not capitalise on Dibaba’s absence, losing out to Florence Kiplagat in the closing metres of the 8km race in Amman.

Kiplagat is in a rich vein of form

The UK, Europe and the US are not without challengers, however as with the men’s event, the non-African athletes will be racing for the scraps as racing gets underway at lunchtime on Sunday.
