If the cap fits...

There is a lot of kit out there, that can cost a lot of money. Some of it is non-essential, but nice to have, some of it is, well essential. I would always put a hat in that bracket, personally. You just can’t beat a good hat…

First things first. You may well think that the MST office gets flooded with kit from brands, and that is is going to be a review of another freebie. Well contrary to that perception I do actively like to go out and buy some kit, and always try and be independent and objective when it comes to reviews. So the following is in reference to a hat bought with my own hard-earned.

Gore have been experts in textile technology for a few years now and when I wanted a hat that would be warm, comfy and breathable I was guided to the brand that is synonymous with all of the above. Additionally, their ‘running wear’ has some great products in the line-up and is fast gaining status as a great ‘mountain’ brand too.

I have had an array of hats over the years. I’ve flirted with the good old woolen bobble hat. Lovely and toasty in the dry, though can be a bit hot, and flippin heavy when soaked through. Then there is the fleece style, which for me is just too hot, and can be a little restricting on a run. And finally the all singing, all dancing Buff, very versatile, but just not warm enough in really cold conditions, in my view.

So after around 4 different head-wear garments over the last 2-3 years I just felt compelled to sing the praises of the Gore Pulse Beany.

It’s light, it definitely breathes as I have used it in temps above and below freezing and and never felt that my head was soaked in sweat or cold. It seems to fit my head to perfection too, and it doesn’t restrict the flow of blood and give you a headache, which some hats can do. 9 months in, it has been left in the bottom of a smelly backpack, been through the washer and tumbler (I know I shouldn’t be tumbling lycra!) and is a functional as the day I bought, back in March. I just can’t fault it – that’s it really!

Available at all good running outlets now…

Mud, Sweat and Tears was dreamt up some time ago. I had returned to the sport of running (competitively) after around a 15 year layoff due to injury.
