This weekend sees one of the most challenging mountain races in the States. The Pikes Peak Ascent® and Pikes Peak Marathon® are deemed as America’s Ultimate Challenge and form the US leg of the Skyrunner® World Series races…

In its 54th edition, with a massive 838 entrants, the Pikes Peak is a biggee in all manner of ways – international entries come from as far a field as Singapore. In the men’s event Series leader Ricardo Mejia has predicted a 3:30 finish time, with ‘local man’ Matt Carpenter seeing a 3:33 as viable and providing an excellent recce of the course to boot – he should know as he also holds the course record of 3:16. The UK’s John Heneghan makes the long trip too, although we think he will better his predicted 4:10!

Ricardo Mejia - no stranger to Skyrunner® wins

The women’s course record hasn’t been troubled since way back in 1981, held by Lynn A Bjorklund, with the best, most-recent time coming from Angela Mudge (4:19) in 2003. This year the field is mainly made up of domestic elite athletes and the main challenges should come from Keri Nelson, Joni Taylor and Victoria Funk.
