Swinburn breaks record at Y Garn

Today’s British Fell Championship final round at Y Garn produced a fantastic new course record, which had stood since 1989. Nick Swinburn turned out a storming run to defeat a class field, and take Colin Donnelly’s long-standing record in the process.
The 2008 champion Rob Hope had retained his title at the last round, Tebay, however he made doubly sure of another great set of championship results by taking a close second behind Swinburn. Rob’s brother Danny ran a great race to take third, with Tom Owens’ 4th place good enough to secure the runner’s up spot in the 2009 championship. Swinburn has been in great form of late on the track – with a swift 14.30 5,000m time posted earlier in the summer – his winning time of 25.44 took 21 seconds off the course record.
Clare Whitehead
Cosmics’ Clair Whitehead made the long journey south and showed Emma Clayton and Fiona Maxwell the way, as she won the women’s race. Maxwell’s third on the day good enough to ensure her third place overall in the 2009 championship. However, the 2009 winner’s accolade goes to Pippa Jackson, who had secured the title by the time Tebay was done…
