Let's go Round again!
All smiles at the end...
A story of a special piece of running, from a couple of leading lights in the Irish mountain running scene. This weekend two Irish runners completed the Wicklow Round – one man, one woman. One of ‘em happens to be a writer on MST, yep our very own Moire O’Sullivan!
Moire picks up the story here in a brief report for us:
On Saturday at 11.38am, I became the first person to complete the Wicklow Round in under 24 hours. It took me 22 hours 58 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the 100km, 6000 metre climb course over 26 peaks in the Wicklow Mountains.
Hot on my heels was Eoin Keith who, less than 12 hours later, set a new record of 17 hours 53 minutes and 45 seconds.
Designed by IMRA back in 2006, the Wicklow Round is the only long distance mountain running challenge in Ireland. Since its inception, four attempts have been made at recording a sub-24 hour time (including an attempt I made in July 2008). Now within one Irish Bank Holiday weekend, two people have made it around!
The pub is that way...
You can even see her spilts too. However if you want to be touched by a moving account of one person’s inner belief that anything can be achieved, do yourself a favour and put 15 minutes aside to read Moire’s full account of her Round…
