Legacies can work
If the 2008 World XC’s visit to Edinburgh is a yardstick then we should be encouraged to hear that major events can leave a legacy, which benefits future generations. As this article outlined some weeks back, legacy planning doesn’t always come off…
However, a news piece on the Scottish Athletics site states:
The City of Edinburgh Council and its partners are proposing to use legacy funding from the World Cross Country Championships held in Edinburgh last year to invest in developing the sport at a schools level
The Edinburgh Schools Cross Country Championships, which are aimed at schoolchildren in their late primary or early secondary years, will benefit from the £50,000 surplus resulting from the 2008 World Cross Country Championships
The £50,000 would be spent on a variety of equipment, such as a public address system, race timing and marshals’ jackets, and on teachers’ Continuous Professional Development, school resource packs, training for coaches and officials, and related club development
With economic and corporate nervousness still in abundance when it comes to private sector investment in to sport it is of paramount importance that all major athletic events, on a global scale, have one eye on the future.
