Runners at the 15km 2009 PUMA Hawkshead Trail Race on Saturday enjoyed perfect conditions, and even better scenery, as a festival of events – including the PUMA Hawkshead Challenge – took place in this beautiful part of the in the Lake District.

Pudsey & Bramley runner John Heneghan took the spoils in a field of almost 600 runners, across events. Heneghan has been in great form in the early part of 2009, winning at Wild Boar, Wolf’s Pit and placing second at the Pendle Half Tour in March, and was a clear winner from Salford’s John Brown. Clayton le Moors runner Candice Taylor had a superb run in the women’s event to place 19th overall, 3 places ahead of Glasgow’s Susan Partridge, with City of York’s Vicky Graves in third.

The race follows a circuit along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways takes in panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding peaks of the Coniston Hills, the Langdales and most of the Lakeland fells.

The Lakeland Trails events run through to October, and the site describes them as:

Some of the most scenic and inspiring running and walking events in the UK, for all ages and abilities, held within the iconic landscape of the Lake District National Park. A festive, family-friendly, carnival atmosphere awaits you at every venue. The trail courses are well marked and marshalled journeys along environmentally sustainable bridleways and footpaths through some of the most scenic and beautiful countryside in Britain.

Full results from Hawkshead can now be found at the Lakeland Trails website, with the next race at Garburn on the 6th of June.
