Ethiopia 1 Kenya 0 - Dibaba retains grip
After a valiant effort from Kenya’s Mercy Cherono her form on the last hill was left wanting as defending champion, and sister of the great Tirunesh, Genzebe Dibaba strode up the hill to take the junior women’s title by a few metres. Kenyan faces were left even longer as the Ethiopians took the team prize too.
The early pace was relatively sedate and meant that the pack was sizable going into the second km, and the competition between Kenya and Ethiopia was obvious as some athletes could be seen physically pushing each other in this first of the four battles.
However, the race settled and for the most part it was a monumental duel between Dibaba and Cherono – with the former retaining her title and getting Ethiopia off to a great start at the 37th World Cross Country Champs.
GB runner Lauren Howarth had a superb run in 13th, the second non-African athlete – a great performance from the British runner. She was followed home in 14th by fellow GB athlete Charlotte Purdue as the British team finished an excellent 4th place.
