BUCS Orienteering Championships
Fast, open woodland was greeted by all
This weekend saw the British University Orienteering Championships hosted by Oxford University. It therefore came as no surprise to find this year’s British University Champions would be crowned on a flat and fast woodland course.
The competition is run over two days. The first day involves an individual competition with the best 3 counters on the male and female courses counting towards the team position. The second day is relay day with the first relay team for both women and men counting for the overall University points. In recent years it has been a dual between Edinburgh and Sheffield, with Edinburgh normally getting the upper hand.
The individual race took place on Saturday with Great Britain International Scott Fraser putting in a dominant performance and taking the men’s individual title. Oxford student Alison Crocker took the women’s individual title and the overnight University leader board showed Edinburgh ahead with Oxford in second and Sheffield in third.
Fraser - clear winner in the individual class
Sunday saw the relays (three in a team) and a convincing display by Edinburgh saw them take first in both the men’s and women’s classes and guarantee that they would be taking home the overall trophy and retaining their title from last year.
It was slightly closer between second and third but a stronger performance from the Oxford women meant Sheffield would drop out of the top two for the first time in a number of years.
