Andy's sure gonna sweat in the 'Tower'

On the 19th of March the UK’s first stair-climbing race, Vertical Rush, takes place at Tower 42 in London. Saab Salomon Outdoor Team member Andy Symonds will be taking part, convinced it might be a good idea after his interview on the Chris Evans Radio 2 show a few weeks back!

The opportunity came along to compete in this the first tower race in the UK and I became intrigued to see what it would be a like to race up a long flight of steps

Says Symonds…

Since entering I’ve tried on a building about a fifth of the height and…it was painful.. I’m also hoping that the landings will be better spaced than the hotel I practiced in as I was getting quite dizzy after only 10 stories!

It’s going to be about a 6-8 minute burn out with some serious lactic suffering by the last quarter…speed, leg strength and crucially pace judgment will be key so as not to die a painful quad-death by the 5th floor. Unfortunately it’s a European-style uphill only race as I normally tend to come through on the descents, but won’t get this opportunity in London…!

We will be there to bring you all of the thrills, and hope not too many spills, seeing if the Saab Salomon Outdoor Team can win the UK’s first ever tower running event.
